CANOEING

DATE: TBA Location: Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada This beautiful island at the top of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia is dotted with freshwater lakes, not unlike the famous lochs of Scotland, often long and narrow, with fjord-like mountains on either side. Fresh water mixes with salt as the inland waterways meet the Atlantic Ocean through bays and inlets, and the coastline is dotted with secluded coves and islands. SSC’s Canoeing Expedition will take you on a week-long journey through gorgeous scenery, and teach you how to handle a canoe or kayak. Accommodation is in your own tent on the shore.

WINTER SURVIVAL

DATE: TBA Location: Boreal Forest - Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada The deep snow that blankets our island during the winter months has to be seen to be believed. Gale force winds blow in from the Atlantic Ocean, bringing ice storms, freezing rain, and thick fog across the lowlying areas. The storms leave behind snowdrifts, six feet high and more. Survival in the deep snows of winter is a completely different challenge. Come out to the Snow Belt for a week-long adventure in a Canadian winter. Snowshoeing, digging a snow hole, making fire in sub-zero temperatures, keeping warm, and traveling safely across deep snow, will be just a few of the skills you’ll learn during this intense but satisfying course.

WILD CAMPING

DATE: TBA Location: Boreal Forest, Nova Scotia, Canada This is hard-core camping for the person who is not afraid to leave behind all the comforts of modern life for a week. We will travel light, taking only the minimum required to survive in the wild. The group will set off to trek deep into the Cape Breton Highlands, into a wilderness region far from any civilization. You will learn how to make do with the bare essentials as we set up camp; everyone will be expected to do their part. This is how you create a team that relies on each other, and pulls together when things get tough. Whatever the weather, we will work to achieve our objective and reach the other side of the mountain. This is an excellent course for team-building and the honing of individual skills.
